Breaking Down

by Stephenie Meyer

PREFACE p. 6
If your life was all you had to give your beloved, how could you not give it?
If it was someone you truly loved?

Chapter 1 [ENGAGED] p. 13, 16, 17
“Stop fidgeting, Bella. Please try to remember that you’re not confessing to a murder here.”
“Easy for you to say.”

He wasn't exaggerating; they'd been big on old-fashioned morals during World War I.

Early marriage was higher up on her blacklist than boiling live puppies.

Chapter 2 [LONG NIGHT] p. 24
How different it would be when he didn't need to worry about me anymore. What would he do with all his free time? He'd have to get a new hobby.

Chapter 3 [BIG DAY] p. 33, 34
“No one expects me to be stunning. I think the bigger problem is that I might fall asleep during the ceremony and not be able to say ‘I do’ at the right part, and then Edward will make his escape.”
She laughed. “I'll throw my bouquet at you when it gets close.”

“Don't worry, he'll be there before the music starts. But you don't get to see him, no matter when he gets back. We're doing this the traditional way.”
I snorted. “Traditional!”
“Okay, aside from the bride and groom.”

“No one will dare to call you plain when I'm through with you.”
“Only because they're afraid you'll suck their blood,” I muttered.

Chapter 4 [GESTURE] p. 56
“You're awfully small to be so hugely irritating.”

Chapter 5 [ISLE ESME] p. 64
I was freaking out because I had no idea how to do this, and I was afraid to walk out of this room and face the unknown. Especially in French lingerie. I knew I wasn't ready for that yet.

Chapter 6 [DISTRACTIONS] p. 83
“So you seduced your all-too-willing husband. That's not a capital offense.”

“If I don't have a better sense of equilibrium in my next life, I'm demanding a refund.”

Chapter 7 [UNEXPECTED] p. 93, 97
there was no way I could be pregnant. The only person I'd ever had sex with was a vampire, for crying out loud.

While he argued, he packed. He whirled around the room like an angry tornado, leaving order rather than destruction in his path.

Chapter 9 [SURE AS HELL DIDN’T SEE THAT ONE COMING] p. 130, 134
I didn't want to kill girls... even vampire girls.
Though I might make an exception for that blonde.

“If it's a child she wants, she can have it. She can have half a dozen babies. Anything she wants.” He paused for one beat. “She can have puppies, if that's what it takes.”

Chapter 10 [WHY DIDN'T I JUST WALK AWAY? OH RIGHT, BECAUSE I'M AN IDIOT.] p. 146
“Why do you always have to love the wrong things, Bella?”

Chapter 11 [THE TWO THINGS AT THE VERY TOP OF MY THINGS-I-NEVER-WANT-TO-DO LIST] p. 160
Seth stayed on my heels, holding the Second's traditional place on my right flank.
I can run somewhere else, he thought, his nose dipping a little. I didn't follow you because I was after a promotion.

Stop being so... Took me a minute to decide on the right word. Optimistic. It’s getting on my nerves.
No problem. You want me to be all doom and gloom, or just shut up?

Chapter 12 [SOME PEOPLE JUST DON’T GRASP THE CONCEPT OF “UNWELCOME”] p. 169, 171, 177, 178, 180
Shut up, Jacob. Oops, I'm sorry−I meant, shut up, most high Alpha.

I've been helpful, haven't I, Jake?
You haven't made too much a nuisance of yourself, kid,

“You're losing me, Doc. Can you dumb it down?”

Your family's divergence from humanity is much more interesting. Magical, almost.”
“Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” I mumbled.

It was like a horror movie. Monsters and blood all over the place.

Chapter 13 [GOOD THING I'VE GOT A STRONG STOMACH] p. 183, 187, 188, 189
I wondered what all house-of-horrors stuff they kept around here. Fridge full of blood, check. What else? Torture chamber? Coffin room?

No one else in this group would be disgusted by what she was doing. Just the opposite−they were probably having a tough time not ripping the cup away from her.
Edward rolled his eyes.

Jeez, how did anyone stand living with him? It was really too bad he couldn't hear Bella's thoughts. Then he'd annoy the crap out of her, too, and she'd get tired of him.
Edward chuckled once.

She was allowed to kill herself for a monster, but I wasn't allowed to miss a few nights' sleep to watch her do it?

Chapter 15 [TICK TOCK TICK TOCK TICK TOCK] p. 216
Who cares about legal crap when you're the undead?

Chapter 16 [TOO-MUCH-INFORMATION ALERT] p. 231
Off on another vampire errand, Leah grumbled.
You got a problem with that?
Of course not. I just
love to coddle those darling leeches.

Chapter 17 [WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE? THE WIZARD OF OZ? YOU NEED A BRAIN? YOU NEED A HEART? GO AHEAD. TAKE MINE. TAKE EVERYTHING I HAVE.] p. 254, 255, 257, 259
So the psycho was “Rose” now. He’d completely crossed over to the dark side.

“I am truly sorry for the pain this causes you, Jacob. Though you hate me, I must admit that I don’t feel the same about you. I think of you as a... a brother in many ways. A comrade in arms, at the very least. I regret your suffering more than you realize.(...)”

Crazy how easy it was, walking through the dark with a vampire right beside me. It didn't feel unsafe, or even uncomfortable, really. It felt like walking next to anybody. Well, anybody who smelled bad.

“Rose'll catch me if I trip over my feet. Which could happen pretty easily, since I can't see them.”

Chapter 19 [BURNING] p. 278
Jacob−who'd said goodbye to me over and over but kept coming back when I needed him.

Chapter 20 [NEW] p. 301
“I guess my brain will never work right. At least I'm pretty.”

Chapter 21 [FIRST HUNT] p. 303, 313
Alice grumbled, “Her fashion sense hasn't improved as much as her balance.”

I rolled my eyes and snorted. “Let's go hunt some stinking herbivores.”

Chapter 22 [PROMISED] p. 317, 322, 327
“(...)She sleeps.”
“Really?”
“Quite well for a newborn. The only parents in the world who don't need sleep, and our child already sleeps through the night.” He chuckled.

“Huh. I can see what everyone's been going on about. You stink, Jacob.”

“No, not really? You really didn't attack him?”
“Emmett!” I protested.
“Aw, what a waste,” Emmett groaned.

Chapter 23 [MEMORIES] p. 342, 344
She didn't want Jacob hurt. He was hers.
“Oh, wonderful,” I groaned. “Perfect.”
“It’s just because he tastes better than the rest of us,”

No magic visions, no formidable offensive abilities like, oh, shooting lightning bolts from my eyes or something? Nothing helpful or cool at all?

Chapter 24 [SURPRISE] p. 348, 353, 354
I wondered if I should feel excited. It seemed the vampire conversion hadn't given me any sudden interest in sports cars.

I laughed out loud−just one quiet little laugh of shock−when I realized that this day would never end.
“Do I get to hear the joke?”
“It’s not a very good one,”

I sighed. My baby, the sea serpent. Maybe there was no help for it.

Chapter 25 [FAVOR] p. 371
“No, I don't care if you bite Jacob. That's fine.”
Jacob chuckled.

Chapter 32 [COMPANY] p. 443
Jacob seemed more or less invisible to them, not quite a person, but also not food, either. They treated him the way people who are not animal-lovers treat the pets of their friends.

Chapter 37 [CONTRIVANCES] p. 524, 525
Edward leaned his head against the same shoulder where he'd placed Renesmee. “Goodbye, Jacob, my brother... my son.”

“If we live through this,” Garrett whispered to Kate, “I'll follow you anywhere, woman.”
“Now he tells me,” she muttered.

Chapter 39 [THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER] p. 538
“Well done, Siobhan,” Carlisle complimented her as they said goodbye.
“Ah, the power of wishful thinking,” she answered sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
